Lees Hall maps
Below is a scan of a map, originally drawn on parchment, made in 1805. As you can see, there was very little else around and Sheffield would have been about a mile’s walk away. The close proximity of Cockshutts Farm can clearly be seen. Since their route to the outside world passed directly by Lees Hall, it is hoped they had a good relationship! The farm was demolished during the 1970’s – all that remains is the outer wall and a pond that needs work.
This is a section of the Ordnance Survey map (used with permission) for Derbyshire (Eastern Division) sheet XII.5 – 1/2500 or 25 inches to the mile. The surrounding land is clearly defined between open fields and woods. Since those days, most of the fields have returned to woodland. The land above the Hall (below on this map) is part of Lees Hall Golf Club.
Here it is, gone! All the land to the left, formerly part of the grounds of Thorpe House are developed into the Thorpe House estate. Two of the gates to this country house, long since gone, are still to be seen from Warminster road, if you look carefully! Map © Crown Copyright Reserved. 1206/01
