Garage on Norton Lees Lane

Just below St Paul’s church there used to be a popular garage, selling Matchbox toys, newspaper etc. They were also one of the few places where you didn’t have to put the petrol in yourself! It was also the only source of sweets on a Sunday when most shops were closed. It was owned by Frank Brooks (the one on the ladder) and John Godfrey who were married to 2 sisters and if you were there early enough you would get a brew and toast! The last owner was Jim Thornsby. The garage was itself demolished in the 80s to make way for new housing. Just above this site was an earlier “old cottage”. If you have any more details or better images, please get in touch.
